Presented by California Symphony
featuring Elizabeth Dorman, piano
November 5 - 6, 2022

Elgar—Introduction and Allegro
Bacewicz—Concerto for String Orchestra
Finzi—Eclogue for Strings
Dvořák—Serenade for Strings

Running Time: approx. 1 hour 45 minutes, with one intermission
WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS CONCERT
  • Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro was composed in 1905 to show off the virtuosity of players in the string section of the newly formed London Symphony Orchestra.

  • 20th Century Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz showcases each section—violins, violas, cellos and double basses—and makes each the soloist in her Concerto for String Orchestra.

  • Achingly beautiful, Eclogue for Strings by British composer Gerald Finzi was originally intended to be a grand piano concerto. The one-movement piece that emerged instead—never performed during the composer’s lifetime—is played by San Francisco-born Elizabeth Dorman.

  • Dvořák’s talent for melody-making is at the fore in Serenade for Strings, a rich and soulful piece than takes listeners on a journey from its mellow opening, through a graceful waltz, to a jubilant finale.
