Presented by Smuin Contemporary Ballet
September 20 - 21, 2019

"The Man in Black"
By James Kudelka
Celebrating the legacy of Johnny Cash, former Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada James Kudelka explores American determination and human vulnerability in six covers of iconic Cash songs. Danced in cowboy boots, Kudelka’s movement combines several popular American country-western dance styles—line, square, and swing dancing—with sharp ballet technique and raw emotion in this Company premiere.

"Carmina Burana"
By Michael Smuin
Michael Smuin’s impassioned Carmina Burana celebrates life, lust, and joy—while also mourning the cruelty of fate. Based on the medieval poems that inspired the classic choral score, Smuin’s intensely physical choreography challenges the dancers’ athleticism and expression, culminating in the powerful “O Fortuna.”

"Take Five"
By Rex Wheeler
Following the success of his Sinfonietta last season, former Company member Rex Wheeler creates a mainstage premiere set to selections from jazz legend Dave Brubeck’s lively and innovative albums. Full of surprises both visual and musical, Wheeler’s inventive movement and trademark wit offer a charming and colorful counterpoint to Brubeck’s landmark “Take Five” jazz standard.

Running Time: approx. 2 hours, with two intermissions
Join Smuin Contemporary Ballet for a special meet and greet with the Smuin dancers in the Hofmann Lobby immediately following the program on Friday, September 20, 2019.
