Presented by Smuin Ballet
September 23 - 24, 2016

Smuin’s season opener offers a mixed repertory program introducing the work of Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch with his acclaimed Indigo; presenting a world premiere by Garrett Ammon, Artistic Director of Wonderbound; and paying tribute to the 15th anniversary of the most defining event in modern American history with Michael Smuin’s Stabat Mater, originally choreographed as a response to the 9/11 tragedy.

Running Time: approx. 1 hour 55 minutes, with one intermission

STABAT MATER
Choreography by Michael Smuin
Michael Smuin choreographed Stabat Mater as a powerful response to the events of
9/11 and is “one of the most beautiful ballets of the choreographer’s career” (San
Francisco Chronicle). The ballet, set to composer Antonín Dvorák’s same-titled work based on the sorrowful 13th century hymn “Stabat Mater Dolorosa,” evokes the timeless message of love, loss, and eternal hope.

INDIGO
Choreography by Stanton Welch
Welch’s critically praised piece Indigo examines the vagaries of romantic relationships as four couples come together, fall in love, fight, and exchange partners. Set to music by Antonio Vivaldi, Indigo is a spectacular showcase for the technique, strength, and athleticism of Smuin’s dancers.

WORLD PREMIERE
Choreography by Garrett Ammon
After bringing his playful and quirky Serenade for Strings to the West Coast, Smuin is thrilled to work with Garrett Ammon on a world premiere set to Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra.” The meshing of this classic score with Ammon’s contemporary and adventurous movements is sure to dazzle and delight.
