Presented by Diablo Symphony Orchestra
Music Direction and Conducted by Matilda Hofman

The DSO has many treats in store--we feature music from the ornate world of the Baroque to the great Romantics, from the music of South America and El Mariachi Alegre to Italian opera.  We include many local artists, including a world premiere by Walnut Creek's own Justin Levitt and a performance of the awe-inspiring First Piano Concerto of Johannes Brahms by Randall Benway.  Welcome to your very ownmusical community--we look forward to sharing this wonderful music with you!

2016-2017 Schedule:

Fireworks and Fantasy

October 9, 2016
The early Romantic composers Mendelssohn and Schumann were passionate about the music of the Baroque and were among the first composers to start performing the works of times past.  Here we combine the fireworks and flare of the ornate Baroque with the world of fantasy and imagination of these two friends from Leipzig.  Baroque specialist Tanya Tomkins brings us into the brilliant world of Baroque performance.

Benway Plays Brahms
November 20, 2016
Local pianist extraordinaire Randall Benway joins us to perform Brahms' great First Piano Concerto.  We pair this titanic work with a reflective first half: Scriabin's lush and underperformed "Reverie" and Schubert's bittersweet "Unfinished" Symphony.

Mariachi Meets the Symphony
February 19, 2017
Experience an afternoon of music from Mexico and Brazil--intense, passionate, lyrical, rhythmic, and humorous.  El Mariachi Alegre joins us for a festive finish!  We are also proud to present the Premiere of a work by local Walnut Creek composer Justin Levitt.

Painting with Music
April 2, 2017
Come explore the intersection of symphonic music and visual art with composers who create vivid art with composers who create vivid impressions with musical sound.  Using the instruments of the orchestra like an artist's palette, Debussy experiments with shifting shadows and bursts of light in Nocturnes, inspired by paintings of the same name.  Mussorgsky's famous Pictures at an Exhibition takes us on a promenade through several works of art, bringing each subject to life in Ravel's brilliant orchestration.

La Traviata
May 21, 2017
Our season closes with a complete performance of Verdi's La Traviata, semistaged, with some of the best Bay Area singers!  This famous story of a girl whose position in life causes social conflict and ultimately tragedy when she falls in love is a timeless favorite.  Not to be missed!
