Presented by Solo Opera

A fairytale adventure of a mystical forest, two lost children, an enticing gingerbread house, and a wicked witch…

Come enjoy Solo Opera’s holiday production of Humperdinck’s opera, “Hansel and Gretel”.
For the second year in a row, Solo Opera is pleased to present its holiday “treat” for the entire family, Engelbert Humperdinck’s masterpiece, Hansel and Gretel.  Sung in English, the two-hour Hansel and Gretel opera originates from the beloved German fairytale concerning two poor hungry children sent into the forest by their mother.  Lost, they encounter a wicked witch who lives in a house made of gingerbread.  She tries to capture the children, but they outwit her and end up saving the other lost youth of the village.

The cast and performers will include seven professional adults as the leads, the Contra Costa Children’s Chorus as the Gingerbread Children, and Lori Buffalow’s The Next Step Dance Studio as the Fourteen Angel Ballet.  Hansel and Gretel will be directed/produced by Solo Opera Artistic Director, Sylvia Amorino, and the Music Director/Conductor/Pianist will be Alexander Katsman.  Set design is by Peter Crompton and the graphics by children’s illustrator Pamela Goodman.

Throughout Hansel and Gretel, there is a running theme of hunger and poverty.  In order to tie this into community needs, Solo Opera is pleased to be partnering with Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano for their three performances.  The company asks that you please bring a nonperishable food item with you to the show to donate to the Food Bank’s cause.  Together, let us all help fight hunger!
